Ward-Perry-Dexter papers, 1733-1927.

Papers of the interrelated Ward, Perry, and Dexter families, including: several items related to Gen. Artemas Ward's service in the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars and as a justice of the peace in Worcester County, including a few orders, commissions, returns, and numbers of men around Boston during the siege (1775). Other Ward family members represented include the general's son Artemas and grandson Charles T. Ward. Perry family papers include a letter from Commodore Oliver H. Perry while commanding the ship Java during the War of 1812; and a series of letters from Oliver Hazzard Perry (son of the Commodore) and his second wife, Mary Anne Moseley Perry, to their son William C.G. Perry while the latter was a midshipman on the U.S. frigate Constitution (1863-65). There are also a few Civil War letters from Charles E. Munroe and Abner E. Drury of the 45th and 32nd Mass. Infantry Regiments respectively, written in 1863; a brief commonplace-book kept by Samuel Dexter; and two commissions to Nahum Ward (1733, 42).
